Root Canals

A root canal is a simple, common, routine procedure that is performed over 14 million times a year by an endodontist, who has received additional training and only performs root canal and root canal related precedures. This treatment can save your natural tooth and avoid the need for further procedures such as implants and bridges.

What is a root canal?

At the centre of your tooth is living tissue called pulp, which is a collection of blood vessels and nerves that helps build the surrounding tooth. Infection of the pulp, caused by one or a combination of issues including trauma, deep decay, cracks and/or chips or repeated dental procedures, can be identified as visible injury or swelling of the tooth, temperature sensitivity or pain in the tooth and gums.

How is a root canal performed?

A non-surgical treatment to eliminate the diseased pulp thoroughly cleans and seals the root canal system. Depending on the treatment required, local anesthesia is used (nitrous oxide may also be used) and the procedure may be completed in one to two visits. The success rate for this type of procedure is around 90 per cent. In the event that a tooth is not amenable to treatment, our specialists at Richmond Hill Endodontics will discuss your options when it becomes evident, before, during or after treatment.

What happens after treatment?

Once your root canal therapy is completed you will be able to drive yourself home and should be comfortable enough to return to your normal routine. A record of your treatment will be sent to your restorative dentist. A follow up restoration should be scheduled with your dentist within several weeks of completion of treatment in our office. Though it is rare that endodontic patients experience complications after routine procedures, we at Richmond Hill Endodontics are always available to respond to any concerns you may have. To prevent further or future dental complications, it is imperative that you practice proper oral hygiene and visit your general dentist on a regular basis.

How much will it cost?

The fee associated with root canal therapy can vary greatly. It is most often dependent upon the severity of damage to the affected tooth, and which tooth is affected. Generally, the cost of repairing the damaged tooth via the root canal and restoration is less expensive than tooth removal and replacement with an artificial substitute.
